Sound Therapy

Have you ever used the power of sound to balance your mind, body and spirit?

Research shows that sound affects us on an elemental level. Vibrations in soundwaves impact our cells, nerve, brain, muscle and organ function.

For example, we know that hearing a loud drill for long periods can damage our hearing, or hearing a loud bang can make us jump! Alternatively the sound of the waves crashing on the beach, or listening to our favourite song can be very relaxing and uplifting and put us in a positive mood! Sound therapy causes physiological, bio-chemical and neural reactions as our minds and bodies sync to the vibrations of sound.

Ancient Medicine & Modern Science

Sound therapy exists across many ancient traditions. In Ayurveda mantras, or sacred songs are used to bring balance and harmony to the body, mind and spirit and bijas – or seed sounds are used to re-align the chakras.

Sound therapy can be delivered personally, or in the form of soundjourneys. It is a relaxing experience and also one that offers hope for our immune systems.

In one Californian study public health experts reviewed centuries old Eastern practices to look at how they could be used to tackle chronic stress, which is linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, anxiety and depression. They found ‘the return to traditional ages- old medicine yields new promise for the reduction- or potentially elimination of chronic stress.’

It is well-known that chronic stress impairs the autonomic nervous system, which regulates bodily processes like breathing and blood pressure by hyper-activation of the sympathetic nervous system – also known as ‘fight or flight’ mode. To reduce the impact of this on our bodies, it’s important to activate its parasympathetic state, or the ‘rest and digest’ state. This is important because disorders of the autonomic nervous system can affect any body part or process.

One study involving sixty two people looked at the effect of sound meditation with Tibetan singing bowls on mood, anxiety, pain and spiritual well-being and found that feelings of spiritual well-being significantly increased across all participants. They also found significant reductions in anxiety, tension, anger, depression and chronic pain.
